The Wheaton Pavlik Harness

922.45

The Wheaton Pavlik Harness is a dynamic pediatric orthosis designed to treat developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and infant femur fractures. Unlike rigid braces, it allows controlled, natural movement while gently positioning the baby’s legs in flexion (knees bent up) and abduction (thighs spread apart) to secure the head of the thighbone inside the hip socket. Used to hold a fractured thighbone in proper alignment while it heals. Prescribed for infants, typically under 6 months of age, with loose, subluxated, or dislocated hip joints. Allows healthcare providers to make all necessary strap adjustments while the infant lies on their back.

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH): Prescribed for infants, typically under 6 months of age, with loose, subluxated, or dislocated hip joints.
Infant Femur Fractures: Used to hold a fractured thighbone in proper alignment while it heals.
1. Color-Coded Anterior Straps (Patented): Features color coding on the front straps to prevent misapplication during fitting and daily care.
2. Supine Adjustment System: Allows healthcare providers to make all necessary strap adjustments while the infant lies on their back.
3. No Bulky Buckles: Built without heavy or protruding hardware, ensuring the infant remains comfortable in any resting or sleeping position.
4. Soft Inner Lining: Constructed with a soft, gentle inner material to protect sensitive infant skin and prevent chafing.
5. Hook-and-Loop Fasteners: Enables fast, secure, and precise fit adjustments.
6. Anti-Slip Foot Pieces: Keeps the baby’s feet held securely inside the lower stirrups to prevent slippage.
Functional Mechanics
- Front (Anterior) Straps: Control the degree of hip flexion (typically maintained around 90°–110°).
- Back (Posterior) Straps: Control abduction (keeping the thighs spread outwards) to safely hold the joint in place without forcing the leg.
General Care & Usage Guidelines
- Fitting & Adjustments: Initial placement and ongoing strap adjustments should only be done by a qualified orthotist or physician.
- Diaper Changes: The harness design allows standard diaper changes without removing the straps.
- Skin Care: Soft clothing (like a collared onesie or shirt) is typically worn underneath the harness to prevent skin irritation.
